Volunteers in action on the route

 


VOLUNTEER!

Volunteering for the Worst Day of the Year Ride is a great way to support the CCC and to have a fun time. This quirky, unique ride is what it is in part because of volunteers like you.

90 volunteers are needed throughout the couse for a wide variety of positions. Your support ensures a successful ride raising funds to support the Community Cycling Center.

FREE RIDES AND MORE

Volunteering is just plain fun. But, as an extra added bonus, you get a t-shirt, free lunch, and some positions allow for you to also ride the course.

Check out the position descriptions below to see which ones allow you to ride free. If it says Y, part that means you can ride a portion of the course. You'll be generally riding from your position to the finish line. You will get to ride at least four miles of the cours,e and in most cases longer. Depending on your position, you may or may not pass open rest stops, but you are welcome to join us at the finish line party which goes until 4:00 pm.

COURSE MAKING - SATURDAY

WHAT YOU GET:
You get a two free ride passes when you volunteer for this advanced position!

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
Get to see the route and beautiful parts of Portland. The volunteers who helped with this in 2006 had a great time and loved getting a free ride as a result of their assistance.

DETAILS:
Help mark the course on Saturday by driving around with staff. Hang arrows, paint street markings and generally install the signage necessary to help riders follow their way on course. YOU DO NOT NEED A CAR to volunteer for this position. Meet at the Lucky Lab - 915 SE Hawthorne.

PACKET PICK UP - Saturday

WHAT YOU GET:
A free ride pas and a t-shirt

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
Hang out at the Lucky Lab and get your volunteering out of the way so that the next day you can relax and enjoy Sunday, or enjoy the ride. n Watch excited riders stream into the Lucky Lab.

DETAILS:
Full training is provided. You will check in riders and give them their ride packets so that they do not have to wait in line the next day. Meet at the Lucky Lab - 915 SE Hawthorne.

SET UP + REGISTRATION

WHAT YOU GET:
Volunteers who help at this shift will get a free t-shirt, breakfast treats, a free ride and lunch.

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
See the event come together as we transform the Lucky Lab into a a huge event. Watch hoards of anxious, excited riders arrive.

DETAILS:
Help hang banners, erect canopies, unload the truck, set up tables and chairs, check in riders, give information, empty garbage cans and other necessary tasks to get the event rolling.

We have seated and standing, lifting and non-lifting projects available for shy or outgoing people.

LUNCH I

WHAT YOU GET:
Volunteers who help at this shift will get a free t-shirt, lunch and snacks.

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
Whether you like to play Martha Stewart or you just like to be helpful, you'll find this to be a fun position as you help us get ready for a for lunch under the supervision of Awesome Darrin, a caterer who has worked with us on this event sige it first got started. Watch a surge or riders return hungry and appreciative of your efforts.

DETAILS:
Help our caterer prepare food, buss tables, empty garbage cans, answer questions, monitor bike parking and sell t-shirts as well as other tasks as needed.

We have seated and standing, lifting and non-lifting projects available for shy or outgoing people.

LUNCH II

WHAT YOU GET:
Volunteers who help at this shift will get a free ride, a free t-shirt, lunch and snacks.

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
You'll help serve lunch under the supervision of Awesome Darrin, a caterer who has worked with us on this event sige it first got started. Watch a surge or riders return hungry and appreciative of your efforts. Be in the heart of all the finish line party action.

DETAILS:
Help clean up the event, load supplies in the truck, serve food, bus tables, empty garbage cans, answer questions, monitor bike parking and sell t-shirts as well as other tasks as needed.

We have seated and standing, lifting and non-lifting projects available for shy or outgoing people.

 

MEDICAL RIDERS

WHAT YOU GET:
You get a free ride, and entry into the finish line party!

REQUIRED:
To sign up for this position, you must be an RN, EMT, or MD and provide your own ride-along medical kit and bring a cell phone.

Meet by the Info Tent. We'll gather all medical riders together so you know who else is on course.

RIDE ALONG MECHANICS - 40 mile route

You get a free ride and entry into the finish line party!

IMPORTANT:
Ride along mechanics must have advanced mechanical skills and be able to do on-the-spot basic repair. Mechanics bring their own basic tool kit, a cell phone and are proactive about providing support on course. We will provide a mechanic vest for you to wear on course so you are recognized as a mechanic.
Meet by the Info Tent. We'll gather all medical riders together so you know who else is on course.

CCC REST STOP

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
Spread the word about the CCC while while you refuel riders (who will be most appreciative of what you are providing). Work with our CCC staff to set out food and water, clean up, serve riders, empty garbage cans and other tasks as necessary.

PLEASE NOTE:
You must receive prior approval from volunteer coordinator Neal Armstrong before volunteering for this position.

COURSE MARSHALS

WHAT YOU GET:
You get a free t-shirt and entry to the finish line party for this very important position.

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
Get to see the route and beautiful parts of Portland and cheer on riders as they go. Riders are always very appreciative of course marshals. You can feel proud knowing you're keeping our riders safe.

VERY IMPORTANT DETAILS:
You will be stationed on course to direct riders through unsafe or confusing intersections. Meet at the start line for full directions then drive or bike yourself to your position (depending on how far it is). Let us know IN ADVANCE if you would like a position that is close enough to bike to, otherwise come with a car and you will need to transport yourself. A CELL PHONE IS REQUIRED.

COURSE REMOVAL

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
Take a nice ride around town as you pull signs from the course. We like to clean up all of our signage and keep the course clean. You can be a part of this.

DETAILS:
Please bring a trailer, a car or a pannier to hold the signs. We'll assign you a short leg of the course and you can sign up with a friend if you'd like. Once you sign up, we'll contact you with more details.

 

 

ESPLANADE AMBASSADORS

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
Cheer on riders! Maintain safety on the eastbank esplanade as our riders head along the course. Alert other path users that there are bikers coming through. Bring out your inner cheerleader! This is a great position for people who like to cheer and yell.

PLEASE NOTE:
This is a standing, shouting position.

 

RABBITS

WHAT MAKES THIS POSITION COOL:
You get to ride the entire course before anyone else. You'll take a fresh morning look to ensure we have signs everywhere they need to be and that nothing has fallen down. We'll arm you with signs and tape and a map.

PLEASE NOTE:
You will be traveling the entire course, either Urban or 40--mile - your choice. Please bring a car, pannier or other suitable bag to carry a large stack of laminated signs. (8.5x11)
